ABOUT:

Josh Allen is a 2-yr. starter for the Wyoming Cowboys. While at Wyoming he did not wow you with any statistics, although he did lead the MAC in passing yards in 2016.

SCOUTING:

Allen is a fantastic quarterback to watch on film. He makes backyard football plays that are simply incredible. Allen has a knack for doing spectacular plays. He routinely extends plays with his legs, and does so as a scrambler with the intent to throw unless he has a clear running lane and then make big plays with his legs. Allen is a very athletic player, not lacking for speed or quickness as a quarterback. This ability enables him dangerous for defenses, he is able to evade tacklers inside the pocket, and escape outside and make amazing plays. This leads us to Allen’s next best trait. His creativity. Allen turns a sack into a touchdown. There were too many times defenses had Allen dead to rights, but somehow he was able to make an explosive play out of it.

Not only is he very explosive quarterback, but Allen also is very accurate and possesses a very strong arm. The way the ball flies out of Allen’s hand is special. He is able to throw the ball 50-60 yards but it looks like he barely uses any of his arm strength at all. His angles of his passes are incredible, dropping dime after dime in the only place his wide receivers could catch the ball. Allen is able to make every throw asked of him, and his arm strength enables him to throw outside passes with ease. His inside passes are missiles, not giving defensive backs a chance to knock it down. It deep ball passes are even more incredible, hitting his target almost every time in the smallest of windows.

Lastly, Allen is a very competitive player. He never gives up on his plays, and is always trying to give his team a chance to win. He is also a smart player, and goes through his reads and progressions like a pro, finding the open receiver and making an accurate throw.

The only downside to Allen is his lack of playing high college completion and backyard style of play. In the two games I studied against solid programs like Iowa and Boise State he did not preform that well, suffering either from a lack of talent around him or just from tougher defenses.

NFL COMPARSION:

Ok I know this will rub a lot of people the wrong way with the comparison. When you compare a player that is one of the best to ever play at his position, to a guy that hasn’t played a snap in the NFL it will ruffle some feathers. Anyway, enough with the suspense, here goes. When I watch Josh Allen he reminds me of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. They are both so explosive when left inside the pocket and even more when outside it. They also extend plays with their scrambling, devastating defenses when they thought they certainly had them. Allen and Rodgers also share a fabulous arm, making throws that seem improbable. If Allen can have a career as mildly successful as ARod, he will be a great success as an NFL quarterback.

SUMMARY:

Allen is an amazing quarterback, and not doubt he will be a great quarterback at the next level. His pocket awareness, creativity, scrambling, accuracy on the run, arm strength, explosive ability, and football IQ make him an invaluable player in this year’s draft. Allen is a special player and he will make be a terror for defenses in the NFL. The team that selects him will have a quarterback they can rely on for 10-15 years, giving them chances at the playoffs and even the Super Bowl.

PROJECTION:

Darnold is one of the best quarterbacks in his year’s draft class, and even with all of his flaws still believe that NFL teams will take a risk on him in the first round.
